The honest version
A DIY site is the right answer for some contractors, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. If money is genuinely tight, if you enjoy this stuff, or if you are a one-person operation who answers every call anyway, spend $20 a month and keep the difference. What you are giving up is not the design. It is the follow-up: the text that goes out four seconds after a missed call, the nudge on a quote that went quiet, the review request that goes out automatically. That is where the jobs actually leak out, and it is the part almost nobody builds themselves.
Common questions
Can't I just add a chat widget to a Wix site?
You can, and some of them are decent. What you cannot easily do is connect the missed call, the text back, the follow-up sequence and the review engine so they all run off one number and one inbox. That plumbing is most of what you are paying for.
My nephew built mine for free. Is that enough?
If it loads fast, works on a phone and has your number at the top, it is better than a lot of paid sites. The gap is not the website, it is what happens after someone calls and you cannot pick up.
What if I like building things myself?
Then build it. Seriously — read up on local SEO, set up a Google Business Profile properly, and wire a text-back automation yourself. It is all learnable, it just costs you evenings instead of money.
Can you take over a site I already built?
